TNFD for UK Commercial Real Estate: Supporting UK commercial real estate companies to understand and apply the LEAP process and disclose against the TNFD framework

This Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) publication, sponsored by Brookfield Properties, developed by Greengage Environmental and supported by a working group of BBP members, provides practical tools for UK real estate investors to integrate nature-related considerations into their decision-making. The document outlines a clear methodology for applying the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework within investment and operational strategies.

The guidance centres on the LEAP (Locate, Evaluate, Assess, Prepare) process—a critical part of the TNFD framework—to help businesses in the real estate sector understand their dependencies and impacts on nature. This approach encourages transparency in disclosures, active engagement with value chain partners, and the identification of knowledge gaps in nature-related risks. By following this structured process, organisations can progressively enhance their nature-positive strategies and reporting over time.

The publication also aims to standardise practices across the sector, promoting alignment with best-in-class nature-related disclosures. By embedding the principles of governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics from the TNFD framework, investors can better manage risks, enhance asset performance, and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient built environment.

The internal launch of the TNFD for UK Commercial Real Estate publication took place during the BBP Quarterly Members Meeting on 3rd October, hosted at One Canada Square by Canary Wharf Group. Attendees had the opportunity to hear a keynote address by Tony Juniper, Chair of Natural England, who underscored the vital role the built environment plays in valuing natural capital and restoring nature. This event provided BBP and MAP members with a first look at the guidance.

We now invite the wider public to trial the publication and share feedback to ensure it is practical and impactful. Your input is essential to refining this resource and to support its adoption across the sector.
