On October 3rd, The Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) launched a new resource for the commercial real estate sector—the BBP Publication on TNFD for UK Commercial Real Estate. Developed in collaboration with Brookfield Properties, who sponsored the project, and technical experts from Greengage Environmental, the publication offers practical tools and insights to support real estate companies in implementing the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework.

Launched to BBP and MAP members during the latest Quarterly Members Meeting, hosted at One Canada Square by Canary Wharf Group, the publication was introduced by Morgan Taylor, Director at Greengage Environmental, followed by a walk-through of the publication by Adam Baranowski, BBP's Head of Climate Action & Investment.

The BBP Publication on TNFD for UK Commercial Real Estate is structured into three key sections: the first 'Background Context' section provides an overview of the global and UK-specific nature and biodiversity crises, their impacts on businesses, and the emergence of the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). The publication also includes a dedicated section titled 'Applying the LEAP Process to UK Commercial Real Estate', providing a detailed, step-by-step guide for implementation, alongside appendices that cover regulatory and policy drivers for action on nature and the impacts of commercial real estate on natural systems.

Tony Juniper's Keynote Address

Tony Juniper, Chair of Natural England, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the critical role that the built environment can play in nature restoration and the importance of valuing natural capital. He stated, "One of the key things that we must do to make this transition to a sustainable economy, which is not only low carbon but also nature positive, is to bring the economic and ecological spheres much closer together, which is why I very much welcome this emphasis on the TNFD."

Member Engagement and Feedback

This publication represents a milestone in BBP's ongoing mission to drive industry transformation, aligning with our 2030 Vision to Amplify, Embed, and Pioneer nature-positive strategies within the built environment.

We welcome all BBP and MAP members to trial the BBP Publication on TNFD for UK Commercial Real Estate, available in the BBP Member Resources area, ahead of its official public launch in November. Members are invited to provide feedback on the publication, to ensure that it is practical, effective, and aligned with industry needs.
